Mendenhall Glacier.

Woke up to a great day. Headed out to the Mendenhall Glacier. It was a picture perfect day. Beautiful blue sky, sunshine, no wind and cool temps. Had a wonderful time there. Went through their visitor center and learned as much as we could. This is a fabulous glacier. This is one of 38 glaciers that feeds off the Juneau Icefield which is a 1500 square mile area.

Nugget Falls at the foot of the Mendenhall Glacier. This is the runoff from the Nugget Creek Glacier.

Nugget Falls comes in at the foot of the glacier and is runoff from the Nugget Creek Glacier.
Within 30 minutes of leaving the Mendenhall Glacier, there was an abrupt weather change. Completely clouded over; winds at about 30 plus mph and rain. Biked down to the Harley store and then up to the Last Chance Mining Museum. There is a huge amount of history with this mine, the Alaska-Juneau Mine, but unfortunately this place seems to be on a fairly steep slide. The place looks to be on a downhill course and wasn’t a good experience. Biked downtown and stopped at the Red Dog for a beer. By the time we finished, the rain had stopped and the sun was coming out. Biked on out of town to the south as far as we could go…only 5 miles; then back to town. Decided to take the Mount Robert’s Tramway up above the town for a scenic overlook since the weather was so good. Saw another film presentation on the area. Have learned a lot about the 3 major tribes in this area and their cultural history. Headed back to the motel to get things ready for an early morning tomorrow. This is an absolutely gorgeous evening. Hopefully we’ll have another great sunset. I missed a photo op last night when we were trying to find the motel. Won’t miss that again! Have to be at the ferry terminal for loading at 6am. Hopefully the weather will hold. We’ve been incredibly fortunate. Someone is watching over us.
